Peach Tree Project Yamanashi
This is a project to solve local issues that we are working on with Murakoshi Seiko Co.
Murakoshi Seiko is a manufacturer of functional parts for the home, mainly manufacturing and selling furniture fittings and door fittings.
The “Peach Tree Project Yamanashi” began by looking at the community of Fuefuki-shi, Yamanashi Prefecture, where Murakoshi Seiko’s factory and development center are located. Yamanashi Prefecture produces 31% of the nation’s peaches. Normally, peach trees are cut down after 20 to 30 years and new fruit trees are grown. When Murakoshi Seiko learned that peach farmers in the area were having trouble disposing of the cut trees, it began to consider the possibility of upcycling the peach trees by utilizing its technology.
Murakoshi Seiko invited 455studio, a local wood processing company that also saws lumber, as a partner to collect and saw the peach trees and explore ways to utilize them. The project aims to promote the use of peach trees not only for its own products, but also for use by craftspeople and artists in a variety of fields, and to “promote peach trees as a material. We also hope to commercialize twigs, bark, and even wood flour, which have not been utilized in the past, with the ideas and cooperation of many people.
The collection of peach trees and packaging of the products will be done in cooperation with local facilities. The wood grain of the peach tree is complex yet beautiful, with a variety of expressions and excellent workability. Our goal is to realize a sustainable society by promoting these attractive materials while raising awareness of environmental conservation and strengthening cooperation with local communities.
We intend to continue to develop products that utilize local resources and coexist in harmony with local communities. Peach tree” is a ‘new material’ that has not been used before, and this project has the potential to become a model case for other regions in terms of utilizing local resources.
