“Suruga Bamboo Thousand-Line Craftsmanship” is a traditional art form that showcases masterful skill by intricately assembling thin, round bamboo strips known as sensuji higo into elegant curves. The delicate, lightweight bamboo lines create forms that seem to gently enclose the air itself. Historically, these pieces have been cherished as containers—flower vases, insect cages, and confectionery holders.

In this work, we explore the transformation of Take-sensuji from a traditional “container” into a vessel of light—a lamp stand. Within this airy form, subtle pools of light emerge as the bamboo reflects the glow from an invisible source. The lamp softly radiates a play of light and shadow in a radial pattern, bringing a quiet warmth to the space.

Lightweight and easy to handle, with a gentle texture, this handcrafted object harmonizes traditional techniques with modern lifestyles. By integrating traditional craftsmanship with contemporary technology, we have developed a lighting device that operates on low voltage and does not require batteries—it can be powered via AC adapter or mobile battery.
