Reviving Postmodernism — Shiro Kuramata, Makoto Komatsu, Masaharu Takasaki, and the Humanism of Design
Since the 1960s, Shiro Kuramata critically engaged with his era through interior designs imbued with irony and a sense of nihilistic humor, produced from within the heart of commercialism. In 1975, Makoto Komatsu created his iconic Crinkle porcelain series, parodying paper shopping bags and reflecting a society saturated with information in the wake of Japan’s postwar economic growth. Through architecture reminiscent of futuristic space cities, Masaharu Takasaki has continually proposed visions of coexistence and future forms in which humanity, nature, and society are integrated.
Centered on the works of these three figures, this exhibition explores how postmodern design and architecture can remain effective and meaningful in the 21st century, primarily through works from the museum’s collection.
